A Grand Avenue Revival: Massachusetts Avenue Landscape History & Design Guide

This brief history and guide hows how coordinated plantings will enhance public enjoyment of the part of Massachusetts Avenue NW known as Embassy Row. This route’s fabled Beaux Arts mansions are preserved by law. But there was no guidance for the street landscape, such as allées of large trees, which were dying or being cut down.
The book aimed to explain the original 19th century design of the “grand avenue” - perhaps the last such landscape in the nation. And show what’s needed for it’s restoration as a 21st century sustainable street. Free print copies may be requested, and the pdf downloaded, through Restore Mass Ave’s web site. Since publication it has been used by others hoping to marry landscape, trees and architecture on other DC streets.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation supported design of the print and online versions. A Grand Avenue Revival won the 2015 Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation/Education from the DC Preservation League and Office of Planning.
